The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) is a computer-based test of attention and impulse control, used in the assessment of attention deficit disorders (ADHD/ADD) in children and adults. The report is generated immediately after the test.

How it works
A computer-based test
The TOVA test is straightforward and non-invasive. You sit in front of a screen with a clicker in your hand and respond to symbols; the test can also be run with auditory stimuli. A trained psychologist is present throughout and helps children in particular feel safe. The procedure is manual-based and divided into four phases: introduction, practice test, test and feedback.

Introduction
The instructions are pre-recorded and played from the computer. They are simple and tested on children, young people and older adults alike.

Practice test
A short practice run, so you are fully comfortable with the task before the real test begins.

Test
About 21 minutes at the screen: press the clicker when particular symbols appear. The computer measures reaction times and errors.

Feedback
The report is generated immediately and gives a precise comparison with the general population. We go through the result with you.

Screening, not a diagnosis
Can TOVA make a diagnosis?
TOVA gives very good insight into whether there are grounds to suspect an attention deficit disorder (ADHD/ADD), but it cannot stand alone when a diagnosis is to be made. A formal diagnosis requires further clarification through a clinical history and, where relevant, targeted questionnaires.
TOVA works best as a screening: if the result points that way, we are happy to help you further with a complete assessment.
A note on medication
Even when a diagnosis is in place, treatment with medication is always a medical decision made by a doctor or psychiatrist. A TOVA test does not in itself open the door to medication.
