Group-dynamic therapy group

We become who we are in meeting others — and that is also where we can change. In a group-dynamic therapy group (also called a process group) we work with what happens between people: how you come across to others, how others affect you — and how you can be more yourself in any social space. The group is facilitated in Danish and English.

Group-dynamic therapy group — people in a circle in conversation

Why a group?

We repeat our patterns — without even knowing it

The ways we learned to be with others early in life follow us into the communities of adulthood. In the family, at work and among friends we often fall into the same roles: the one who fixes; the one who disappears; the one who keeps the peace; the one who feels left out. The patterns are rarely something we chose — they run by themselves. And that is exactly why they are so hard to spot on your own.

A therapy group is a social space in miniature. What happens out there in your life sooner or later begins to happen in here too — but in the group it happens in a place where we can slow down, get curious and examine it together as it unfolds.

The group is led by a psychologist and works group-dynamically — inspired by Irvin Yalom’s interpersonal group therapy and by emotion-focused methods, where the emotions as they arise in the room are the compass. Read more about our forms of therapy here.

What the group can give you

Who am I when I am with others?

See others more clearly

As you get to know the inner lives of a handful of other people over time, people as such become less of a mystery. You discover what may hide behind silence, sharpness or charm — and that follows you out of the group.

Understand your reactions

Your reactions to the others in the group are not random. The irritation, the being moved, the urge to withdraw — together we examine what they are about, and what they usually make you do.

Be more yourself

The goal is not to become someone else. It is to be able to be who you are — even with others in the room. In the group you can practise saying out loud what you usually keep to yourself.

You are not alone

One of the most powerful things in group therapy is discovering that others struggle with something like yours. What felt like not being good enough turns out to be human.

Honest, caring feedback

Where else do you learn how you actually come across? In the group, feedback is given with respect and curiosity — not to judge, but to understand.

A safe place to practise

New ways of being together need somewhere to be tried out. The group is a protected space to experiment in — before you take it out into the rest of your life.

How we work

Three principles carry the group

Here and now

We talk less about the past and more about what matters in your life right now. That may be relationship problems, self-worth or other current themes. It is not the story of what happens outside the therapy room that in itself carries the group and you forward — it is working with the dynamics the stories give rise to as they unfold. That is why the group process often seems to take up far more space than the experiences outside the room. It makes it possible to understand and change your patterns precisely as they show themselves.

Emotions as the compass

Starting from the participants’ reactions, the different emotional experiences are decoded; the group becomes a training space where we practise sensing and putting words to what moves in us — instead of avoiding, talking around it or acting unhelpfully. The emotion that arises in the group is rarely wrong; it is information. Over time we build a greater capacity to understand, hold and act in line with who we are.

Curiosity rather than advice

In the group we do not give each other advice or solutions. We listen, ask and share what the other person’s story stirs in us. Most people have already received plenty of advice from those close to them, and it is often far more effective to be met with deep understanding and curiosity than with even the best-meant solutions.

Framework and ground rules

A safe framework makes the deep work possible

The group

A small, stable group of adults — at most eight members — and a psychologist. The group meets weekly for 1 hour and 50 minutes at a fixed time. New members are admitted on a rolling basis when there is room in the group.

Getting started

All new members start with a short, individual preliminary session. We then agree on an initial period — typically about a month — in which you and the group find out whether it is the right match.

Confidentiality

What is shared in the group stays in the group — without exception. Members do not meet privately while the group runs; what arises between you belongs back in the room, where it can be used.

Continuity

The safety of the group is built on stable attendance: plan to take part every time. Most people get the most out of 6–12 months of participation — and when you want to stop, it happens with notice, so the group can say a proper goodbye.

When you feel like staying away

The work in the group can be hard and give you an urge to stay away. When you notice that, the best thing you can often do is bring the experience back to the group. It gives you the chance to understand your urge to avoid — and to keep working on how you take part in social spaces.

Price and enrolment

Payment is made one month at a time (4 group sessions). See also our consultation prices — and write to us below to hear about the next available place.

Practical

The group meets in Copenhagen

The therapy group meets at our office at Vendersgade 4 — 50 metres from Nørreport Station. Group therapy is offered exclusively from the Copenhagen office.

The group can stand alone or be combined with individual therapy — we work that out together at the preliminary session.

Is a group right for me?

If your difficulties arise in meeting others — conflict, withdrawal, loneliness or the need to always please — the group is often the most direct place to work on them. If you are unsure, we will figure it out together.
