What is stress-relief massage?
When the body is allowed to let go, the mind follows
Stress settles in the body: the shoulders creep up, the stomach and chest tighten, and the breath becomes short. Stress-relief massage works purposefully to release the body’s stress. It is not a forceful deep-tissue massage where you are "worked through". It feels gentle and relaxing, and its purpose is to calm the nervous system, release tension and give the body room to hold emotions.
Body and mind are inseparably connected, which is exactly why the massage at EGOLAB is delivered by a psychologist. Your needs and focus are aligned, and you are guided gently through the process. The result is a treatment where an understanding of the psychology of stress and the body’s signals go hand in hand.
How it works
Three paths to calm
The nervous system settles
The gentle approach activates the body’s calming system: the pulse drops, breathing deepens, and the alarm response is lowered.
The tension releases
Shoulders, neck and back, where stress lives — are released without harsh manipulation. Precise, gentle techniques start a process in which muscles and tendons are calmed and encouraged to let go.
Emotions get room
As tension is regulated, the body begins to find more room to process emotional reactions. Emotions that have been locked in as tightness are free to move again.
What does the research say?
Massage is more than pampering. A comprehensive research review (Field, 2016) documents beneficial effects across a wide range of conditions, including pain syndromes such as arthritis and fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, and symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Especially relevant for stress: studies comparing light and moderate pressure (Field, 2014) find the clearest effects with moderate pressure — lower heart rate and cortisol (the stress hormone), increased vagal activity, and brain patterns matching a relaxation response — alongside reduced anxiety and low mood. The pressure is always adapted to you.

Your practitioner
The massage is delivered by psychologist Pilar in Copenhagen
Pilar is a psychologist and trained massage therapist at EGOLAB. She combines her professional knowledge of stress and the nervous system, and her background in somatic psychotherapy, with a gentle, present style of massage. You are in hands that understand what stress does to both body and mind.
The pace is yours: the massage is adapted to you and how you feel that day, and you decide how much or how little is said along the way.
When you are ready for it, the massage can also include psychotherapy along the way. Finding the right moment is a balance: first the nervous system needs to settle, then we can begin to process and put words to the psychological mechanisms at play. Together we find out how you benefit most.

Body and mind
Stress lives in the body, and can be released through the body
Talking therapy works with thoughts and habits; the massage works with the body and the nervous system. At EGOLAB you can have both under one roof, and they reinforce each other.
